CNFR Momentum on Mustang’s Side

The Cal Poly Mustangs came on strong at season’s end, with fantastic finishes at the West Coast Regional Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Hosted by the University of Nevada – Las Vegas, the regional finals format included two one-head rodeos.

Cal Poly Men’s Team Captain Lane Santos-Karney took the Men’s All-Around Title at both finals rodeos, and the Cal Poly Men’s Team won the Men’s Team Title at both rodeos en route to clinching the 2014 West Coast Region Men’s Team Championship. Other Men’s highlights from Rodeo 1 included Lane and Taylor Santos-Karney finishing 1-2 in the steer wrestling (Taylor also was the reserve Men’s All-Around Champ); Tim Ditrich splitting the saddle bronc riding with region winner Telden McLain; Chase Bowen placing second in the bareback riding; and the Santos-Karney brothers placing second in the team roping. In Rodeo 2, Men’s highlights included Lane Santos-Karney winning the tie-down roping; Chase Bowen winning the bareback riding; and the Santos-Karney brothers both placing in the top five in the steer wrestling and team roping.

On the Women’s side at the regional finals, Katie Rice won the Women’s All-Around in Rodeo 1 after winning the goat tying and placing third in the breakaway roping. The Cal Poly Women’s Team took the team title at Rodeo 1, and reserve at Rodeo 2. Other Women’s highlights at Rodeo 2 included a second-place barrel racing finish for Cal Poly Women’s Team Captain Brooke Hirschy.

At the end of the West Coast Regional Finals Rodeo, regional champions were crowned at the awards banquet held at the South Point. The Cal Poly Men’s Team won the Regional Title; the Cal Poly Women’s Team is the Reserve Regional Champion Team. Taylor and Lane Santos-Karney finished the regular season ranked 1-2 in the West Coast Region Men’s All-Around Standings, and also 1-2 in the nation. Taylor, who’s a freshman, also brought the 2014 West Coast Region Men’s Rookie of the Year Title back to Cal Poly. Lane is the 2014 West Coast Region Steer Wrestling Champion, and Taylor is the Reserve Steer Wrestling, Tie-Down Roping and Team Roping Titlist (with Lane). Chase Bowen is the 2014 Reserve Champion Bareback Rider in the West Coast Region, and Colton Farquer finished fourth in the tie-down roping.

Women’s Team: Brooke Hirschy (breakaway roping and barrel racing); Alexa Karkula (breakaway roping); Emily Cary (barrel racing); and Kayla Nichol (barrel racing).
